Monsoons and mosquitoes go hand in hand, and as much as I love sipping hot steaming tea with plate of bhajiyas sitting in my balcony, and letting the cool breeze and soft drizzle to enter and chill home, the unwanted guests also come in. Yes the mosquitoes are in my home disturbing the scenic beauty of the weather. However this is a fact and one has to cope with it. The diseases that are widespread due to mosquitoes and that need our attention are:

Malaria fever: Malaria comes from an Italian word for “bad air” and is caused by a parasite called Plasmodium, that is transmitted from the bite of an infected mosquitoes. Malaria fever multiplies in the liver and affects the red blood cells. The symptoms of malaria include fever, headache, and vomiting and occur after 10 to 15 days of the mosquito bite. It is life threatening disease as blood supply to the organs is affected. Prevention is better than cure and thus one needs to avoid the mosquito bite.

Dengue fever in child: Another dreaded disease spread by the mosquito bite is dengue. In this case the female mosquitoes are to be held responsible for transmission. Dengue outbreaks are quite common in Delhi. Dengue symptoms in child is same as  in adults, common Dengue fever symptoms  are high fever, headache, severe pain in eyes, and rashes. Severe cases of dengue proves to be fatal as plasma leaking, fluid accumulation, severe bleeding, organ impairment, respiratory distress are to be faced. Another fact about dengue is that if the mosquito bites the infected patient and then bites another person, even the newly bitten person is affected with the disease.

Chikungunya: A dreaded disease that leaves it affects for about 6 to 12 months after getting infected. It results in chronic pain and could lead to disability also. But the situation is grave because there is no specific cure of the disease and it is only wise to take steps and prevent mosquito bite so as to stop its occurance.

Japanese Encephalitis: It occurs mostly in rural or agricultural areas and is associated with rice farming. It is transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes. The symptoms are mild fever, headache, neck stiffness, coma, seizures, spastic paralysis, and even death. Again the only way to prevent the disease is prevention or worst case even vaccinations are also available.

Elephantiasis: This is a bad disease that not only physically disabled, but also face mental, social, and even major financial losses. The symptoms are painful and disfiguring visible manifestations of the disease, and swelling that could lead to disability in future.

It scares me and with all my might I try to kill the small creature. I may seem funny but the aim to kill the mosquito is similar to that of a soldier trying to kill the enemy. However I give jumping and clapping, but the efforts go in vain, however using a mosquito repellent like Goodknight is the better and safer option apart from being a full proof method also. Thus sitting in my balcony after having switched on Goodknight, I start to sip my tea with a sense of accomplishment.
